Norman Mailer Society Announces Leadership Transitions and Editorial Changes
Wilkes-Barre, PA — October 13, 2025
The Norman Mailer Society announces a series of leadership and editorial transitions following decisions made by the Society’s Executive Board during its annual meeting on October 10, 2025.
After serving two years as President of the Norman Mailer Society, Gerald R. Lucas will be stepping down from the position. During his term, Lucas oversaw significant organizational and digital initiatives while continuing the Society’s commitment to scholarship, teaching, and public engagement with Norman Mailer’s work. The Executive Board has elected Matthew S. Hinton as the Society’s next President. Hinton’s term will begin January 1, 2026.
Matthew S. Hinton is a long-standing member of the Society and a respected Mailer scholar. The Executive Board expressed strong confidence in his leadership as the Society moves into its next phase.
The Society also announces an important editorial transition at The Mailer Review. Phil Sipiora, founding editor of the journal, will be stepping down after editing the first sixteen volumes of The Mailer Review. Sipiora’s stewardship since the journal’s inception has been foundational to the field of Mailer studies, establishing the Review as the premier venue for scholarship on Mailer’s life and work.
Beginning in January 2026, Gerald R. Lucas will assume the role of Editor of The Mailer Review, taking over with Volume 17.
As part of this transition, The Mailer Review will move to a digital-first publication model. A subscription to the journal will continue to be included with Society membership, and optional print editions will remain available for members and institutions. Volume 17 will be issued as a special commemorative edition, celebrating the first sixteen volumes of the journal and honoring the editorial legacy established under Sipiora’s leadership.
The Norman Mailer Society extends its gratitude to both Gerald R. Lucas and Phil Sipiora for their service and welcomes Matthew S. Hinton to the presidency as the Society looks toward its future.
