Conference 2009

Washington Intersections: Ideology, Culture, and Biography. 7th annual conference · Washington, DC · October 23–24, 2009

Call for Papers

The Program Committee seeks proposals for papers and panel presentations during the Seventh Annual Conference of The Norman Mailer Society to be held in Washington, D.C.

Norman Mailer’s literary, political, and personal relationships to the dramatic forces of power in our nation’s capital prompt the theme of our 2009 conference: “Washington Intersections: Ideology, Culture, and Biography.”

On Friday, October 23, the conference will be held at the Library of Congress. Our keynote speaker, Camille Paglia, will speak at Friday’s luncheon. On Saturday, October 24, we move to George Washington University. The entire two days will feature speakers, including Stephen Mailer, investigative reporter Gus Russo, and Congressman Neil Abercrombie. We also invite debates, panels, and roundtables.

Organizers encourage participants to interpret the conference theme broadly. We welcome proposals on all aspects of Mailer’s literary and political work and experience. We are particularly interested in contributions that explore Mailer and the Law and/or the political Mailer: Presidential Papers, Some Honorable Men, Miami and the Siege of Chicago, St. George and the Godfather, Armies of the Night, Oswald’s Tale, and Executioner’s Song. The featured novel is Harlot’s Ghost.

If you are interested in submitting a paper, a presentation panel (three speakers), or a roundtable panel (four speakers), please contact the Program Committee Chair. Interactive panels will emphasize discussion among panelists and audience members. See also: information on joining the society and hotel details. Inquiries are encouraged.

Guidelines for submission: Send a 50–75-word biographical statement and a 250-word abstract of the proposed presentation as MS Word attachments by April 13 to the Program Committee Chair: Deborah Martinson (dmartin oxy edu).

The biographical statement, the titles of all papers, and the abstract should be suitable for the printed program. Panel presentations must be no longer than 18–20 minutes. Roundtable Presentations must be no longer than 10–12 minutes.

Travel Grants of $100, sponsored by The Norman Mailer Society, are available to student presenters.
