Diana Athill Dies

Diana Athill, the British editor who handled Mailer’s books at André Deutsch and later became a celebrated memoirist, has died at 101.

Diana Athill, the British literary editor who worked with some of the finest writers of the twentieth century before becoming an award-winning memoirist, died January 23 at a hospice in London. She was 101, the Washington Post reports.

For Mailer readers, Athill was one of the editors at André Deutsch, his British publisher from the late 1950s into the mid-1960s, where she was an editor and a director. She was among his regular correspondents during the An American Dream years, and Mailer wrote to her several times in 1964 and 1965 as the novel moved from serial to book. Those letters are collected in J. Michael Lennon’s edition of Norman Mailer’s Letters on An American Dream, 1963–1969 (2004).
