Minutes of the 2023 Business Meeting
The business meeting of the Norman Mailer Society was held on April 20, 2023, at the beginning of the Society’s 20th conference in Austin, Texas. President Maggie McKinley presided. Maggie began with announcements regarding logistics of the conference and book sales. Michael Lennon announced that materials from Judith McNally are now available in electronic form and available at the Ransom Center. All her emails, records and drafts from her years as Norman Mailer’s secretary. Newly elected Jerry Lucas was thanked for his assistance with the conference, and he and his wife Autumn were congratulated on the new baby in their family.
Board members whose terms are up in 2023 have agreed to remain for another term. They were nominated and approved unanimously for another term.
Treasurer Matt Hinson gave a report on finances. The costs of last year’s conference was $5,500.00. This year’s conference cost was $19,670.00. Income has remained steady. 2022 income was $11,954.00, including memberships, conference fees, subscriptions and donations. Checking account balance is $5,255 and the savings account balance is $48,222.18. This year’s conference cost is greater because of the bigger and special nature of the conference.
Justin Bozung has stepped down from the Executive Board. A replacement is being considered and an e-ballot likely will be sent for election of the new Board member.
Michael Lennon reported on the upcoming Mailer projects, including Robert Begiebing’s book, Mailer at 100, Lennon’s book with John Buffalo Mailer, A Mysterious Country, and Lennon’s memoir, Mailer’s Last Days, John Buffalo Mailer reported on the Showtime documentary about Mailer that has been produced. Bonnie Culver discussed the play on Norris Church Mailer, starring Anne Archer. Susan Mailer reported that her memoir been translated into Spanish.
The Robert Lucid Award was presented to Robert Begiebing for his book Norman Mailer at 100: Conversations, Correlations, Confrontations.
Raymond Vince told the membership of a recent accident injury resulting in serious injury to Constance Holmes. All were asked to sign a get-well card from the Society to her.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned.
